THE COUNSELLING PROCESS

The process begins with understanding and exploring your needs and goals for counselling. Careful, non-judgmental and kind attention is given to hearing your story and concerns, providing the opportunity for a thorough assessment of relevant factors involved in your history and situation. Building a rapport between yourself and the psychologist within an environment of safety and confidentiality is of great importance to us.

In discussion with the psychologist, the possible basis of presenting problems and feedback regarding treatment options are reviewed. Attention is given to providing supportive care and management strategies for symptom relief; As each person gains awareness and confidence, relevant underlying causes and associated patterns of behaviour can be explored.

We continue to reinforce the symptom management techniques acquired during the initial counselling process. This consolidates improved emotional regulation and supports the client to reconcile deeper entrenched loss and grief, pain and/or trauma. We then introduce intervention strategies aimed at addressing conditioned patterns of thinking/behaviour.

We inform Clients of their progress via certain concrete indices that you too can monitor.  These include a decrease in the frequency, intensity and duration of symptoms/behaviours over time, or an increase in desired new patterns of coping, resilience and responding in relationships and life events.

When required we can also address trauma, loss and grief and/or past identified beliefs, expectations and patterns of behaviour formed in reaction to previous painful experiences.

We work to assist in changing these beliefs and behaviours if they have become unhelpful to the client’s current health, well-being and day to day experience of living and relationships.

We focus on building and strengthening your essential internal and external resources along with your awareness of relationship to self and others to enhance quality of life.

The counselling process can take time, ensuring care and respect to listen to the body and mind’s ability to organise and heal itself, each individual client is carefully guided to work within their own timing.

The fit and therapeutic relationship between the Psychologist and Client are extremely important in proceeding forward; our team work to optimise the therapeutic relationship maintaining the experience of clear guidance, safety, hope and non-judgmental compassion throughout your therapeutic journey.
